How to Convert Markdown to Word (.docx) for Free

The fastest free way to convert Markdown to Word is the FileNaut Markdown to Word converter. Paste your Markdown or upload a .md file, check the preview, and click Download .docx. You get a real Word document: # lines become Word headings, **bold** becomes bold, and pipe tables become proper tables. The conversion runs in your browser, so the file is never uploaded.

Word cannot do this on its own. Open a .md file in Word, or paste Markdown into a document, and you get the raw symbols: pound signs, asterisks and pipes, exactly as typed. That is also why answers copied out of ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini often land in Word full of ** and ##. They are written in Markdown.

Below are three free methods: the browser converter, Pandoc for power users, and Google Docs. You will also find a tested table of what survives the conversion, a section on AI chat output, and how to go the other way, from Word back to Markdown.

Method 1: Convert Markdown to Word in your browser (free, no upload)

Best for: one-off files, AI chat answers, Chromebooks, work computers where you cannot install software, and documents you would rather not upload.

  1. Open the Markdown to Word converter.
  2. Paste your Markdown into the Markdown Input box, replacing the sample text. Or click Upload .md and choose a .md or .txt file.
  3. Check the Document Preview on the right. It updates as you type, so you can fix a broken table or a missing blank line before you export.
  4. Click Download .docx. The file is named after the file you uploaded. If you pasted text, it is named after the document's first heading.
  5. Open the file in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages and edit it like any other document.

The document comes out on US Letter paper with one-inch margins, in Calibri 11 pt. In Word, Layout → Size switches it to A4. Headings use Word's built-in Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles rather than big bold text. That means the Navigation Pane lists your sections, and References → Table of Contents can build a contents page from them in one click.

What survives the conversion (tested)

We converted a test file containing every common Markdown element, then opened the results to see exactly what each method produced. Here is what you get:

ImagesA clickable [Image: alt text] link, not the pictureEmbedded, if the image file is on your computer or reachable online

Why images are not embedded in the browser tool: your Markdown only contains a path to the picture, such as images/chart.png. A web page cannot read files from your computer that you have not selected, and most image hosts block other websites from downloading their pictures. Rather than silently drop them, the converter leaves a link in the right place. Add each picture in Word with Insert → Pictures. If your document has many images, use Pandoc (Method 2), which reads them straight from your folder.

How to convert ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini answers to Word

AI chat apps format their answers in Markdown. The chat window displays it nicely, but the copy button usually copies the raw Markdown, which is why the pasted text in Word is full of asterisks and pound signs. Instead of fixing it by hand:

  1. Click the copy button under the answer.
  2. Paste it into the Markdown to Word converter.
  3. Check the preview. Headings, bullet points and tables should look the way they did in the chat.
  4. Click Download .docx and open the file in Word.

If the preview shows symbols instead of formatting, the text you copied was already plain text without Markdown, for example because you selected it with the mouse instead of using the copy button. In that case, paste it into Word directly; there is nothing to convert. For a long answer you want to keep, it is worth asking the AI to "format the answer in Markdown with headings and a table" before you copy it, so the Word file comes out structured.

Method 2: Convert Markdown to Word with Pandoc (free, command line)

Best for: documents with images, converting many files at once, and anyone who needs the output to match a company template. Pandoc is a free, open-source converter for Windows, Mac and Linux. We tested every command below with Pandoc 3.9.

The basic conversion, run in the folder that holds your file:

pandoc notes.md -o notes.docx

Pandoc works out the output format from the .docx extension, and the pictures your Markdown links to are embedded in the document. Run the command from the folder that holds the Markdown file: Pandoc looks for image paths starting from the folder you run it in, so from anywhere else it cannot find them, prints a warning, and puts the image's description in its place.

Use your own fonts, colours and heading styles. Pandoc takes its styling from a reference document. Create one, restyle it in Word, and point every future conversion at it:

pandoc -o custom-reference.docx --print-default-data-file reference.docx
pandoc notes.md --reference-doc=custom-reference.docx -o notes.docx

Open custom-reference.docx in Word, modify the styles (right-click a style in the Styles gallery and choose Modify), and save. Change the styles themselves rather than formatting the text directly, because Pandoc copies the styles and ignores everything else in that file.

Add a table of contents:

pandoc notes.md --toc -s -o notes.docx

From Python, the pypandoc package wraps the same converter (pip install pypandoc-binary includes Pandoc itself):

import pypandoc
pypandoc.convert_file("notes.md", "docx", outputfile="notes.docx")

One thing to know: if an online image cannot be downloaded, Pandoc prints a warning and leaves it out, but still creates the document. Read the output for [WARNING] Could not fetch resource before sending the file on.

Method 3: Convert Markdown to Word with Google Docs

Best for: people who already work in Google Drive and want to edit the document before downloading it.

  1. In Google Docs, open Tools → Preferences and turn on Enable Markdown.
  2. Copy your Markdown, then in a new document choose Edit → Paste from Markdown. You can also upload a .md file to Drive and open it with Google Docs.
  3. Tidy anything that did not convert the way you wanted.
  4. Choose File → Download → Microsoft Word (.docx).

Google has been adding Markdown support to Docs in stages, so the menu names may differ slightly in your account. If Paste from Markdown is missing, check that the preference is on, or use Method 1 instead.

How to convert Word to Markdown (the other way)

Going from Word back to Markdown is a separate job, and the browser converter above only works in one direction. Two free options:

  • Pandoc. This command produces GitHub-style Markdown and saves the document's pictures into a media folder that the Markdown links to:
    pandoc report.docx -t gfm -o report.md --extract-media=media
We converted our test document to Word and back. Headings, bold and italic, nested lists, task lists, links and table alignment all came back intact. Pictures came back as an HTML <figure> block rather than Markdown image syntax, and the code block lost its language label, so check those by hand.
  • Google Docs. Open the .docx in Google Docs and choose File → Download → Markdown (.md), if your account has that option.

Only have the document as a PDF? Use PDF to Markdown instead, and read our PDF to Markdown guide to see why that direction takes more cleanup.

Tips for a clean Word document

  • Leave a blank line before lists and tables. In Markdown, a list or table that starts on the line straight after a paragraph is often read as part of that paragraph. If something shows as plain text in the preview, a missing blank line is the usual reason.
  • Restyle in Word, not line by line. Because the headings are real Word styles, you can change every Heading 2 in the document at once: right-click the style in the Styles gallery and choose Modify. Or pick a different look under the Design tab.
  • Separate numbered lists with a paragraph. Markdown joins two numbered lists separated only by a blank line into one, so the second list continues the numbering (5, 6, …) instead of starting again at 1. Put a line of text between them.
  • Write and preview first. For a long document, draft it in the Markdown Editor, then paste the finished text into the converter. Use the Markdown Table Generator to build tables without counting pipes.
  • Need a PDF rather than an editable document? Skip Word and use Markdown to PDF. The Markdown to PDF guide covers it.

Frequently asked questions

Can Microsoft Word open Markdown files? ▼
Word can open a .md file as plain text, but it does not convert the Markdown. You see the #, ** and | symbols as typed. Convert the file to .docx first with the Markdown to Word converter or Pandoc, then open the result in Word.
Is there a free Markdown to Word converter that does not upload my file? ▼
Yes. The FileNaut Markdown to Word converter builds the .docx inside your browser. Your text is never sent to a server, there is no sign-up, and there is no limit on how many files you convert. Pandoc is the offline alternative and also runs entirely on your computer.
How do I convert a Markdown table to a Word table? ▼
Convert the whole document, or just the table, with the converter. A pipe table becomes a real Word table with borders, a shaded header row and the column alignment from your :---: markers. The header row is also set to repeat at the top of each page if the table runs onto the next one. Once it is in Word, you can restyle it from the Table Design tab.
Why are my images missing from the Word document? ▼
Markdown does not contain images, only links to image files. The browser converter cannot reach files on your computer that you have not selected, so it leaves an [Image: …] link where each picture goes; insert the pictures in Word with Insert → Pictures. To embed them automatically, run pandoc notes.md -o notes.docx from the folder that holds the Markdown file and its images.
How do I make the Word file use my company template? ▼
Either convert first and then apply your styles in Word (the headings are real Heading styles, so a template's styles take over), or use Pandoc with --reference-doc=your-template.docx. Pandoc copies the styles from that file into every document it creates.
How do I convert a ChatGPT answer into a Word document? ▼
Use the copy button under the answer, paste the text into the Markdown to Word converter, and click Download .docx. The headings, bullet points and tables come through as Word formatting instead of asterisks and pound signs. The same works for Claude, Gemini and Copilot answers.
Is the result a .doc or a .docx file? ▼
A genuine .docx, the standard Word format since Word 2007. It opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer and Apple Pages. Some converters instead save web-page HTML with a .doc name; Word can open those, but they are not true Word documents and can behave oddly when edited.
Can I convert Word back to Markdown? ▼
Yes. With Pandoc, run pandoc report.docx -t gfm -o report.md --extract-media=media. That gives you GitHub-style Markdown and saves the images into a folder. Google Docs can also download a document as Markdown in accounts that have its Markdown support. In our round-trip test, headings, lists, links and tables came back intact.

The short version

To convert Markdown to Word for free, paste it or upload the .md file into the Markdown to Word converter and click Download .docx. Headings, lists, tables, links, code and footnotes become native Word formatting, and nothing is uploaded. Use Pandoc when you need embedded images, a company template or batch conversion, and Google Docs if you want to edit in Drive first. AI chat answers are Markdown too, so the same converter turns them into clean Word documents.
