Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a Word document to Markdown?▼
Drop a .docx file onto FileNaut. It converts straight away in your browser: copy the Markdown, download it as a .md file, or download a .zip that also holds the document's pictures.
What formatting is kept?▼
Headings (from Word's Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles), bold, italic, strikethrough, bulleted and numbered lists including nested ones, tables, links, footnotes, endnotes and images. Text set in a code font such as Consolas or Courier New becomes inline code or a fenced code block. Underline, colours, fonts and page layout have no Markdown equivalent and are dropped.
Why are my headings coming out as plain paragraphs?▼
Markdown headings come from Word's heading styles, not from big bold text. If a title was made by enlarging the font, select it in Word, apply Heading 1 or Heading 2 from the Styles gallery, save, and convert again.
Can it convert the old .doc format?▼
No. The legacy .doc format cannot be read in the browser. Open the file in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice, save it as .docx, then convert that.
Is my document uploaded anywhere?▼
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. The file is never sent to a server, so it works for confidential documents.
