But what is lorem ipsum, what does it actually mean, and why does the entire design industry use the same block of scrambled Latin?

On its own — nothing. The passage is intentionally garbled, so it has no coherent translation. But it isn't random gibberish either. It's chopped up from a real classical text: Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written in 45 BC.

The source sentence reads: "Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit…" — roughly, "Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain…"

So the famous opener "lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" is a truncated fragment of "pain itself loves…" with the front of the first word sliced off (do-lorem → lorem). A Latin scholar named Richard McClintock traced the passage back to Cicero in the 1980s after getting curious about the obscure word consectetur.
